Dana had called Pierre after she’d saved Nova from Stella’s brother. I’d volunteered to go check out the situation, but my father had sent Val and Blake, insisting I still go on my run. I’d followed his advice and it had been sound.

Now, as I stood watching my family and Nova, I didn’t itch to destroy anyone near her or who would harm her. Yes, if the Ramsey brothers touched her again, I’d draw more than a little blood, but the kid who accidently bumped into her as they walked, he would live.

“See you guys tomorrow,” she called to my family as they walked toward Dana’s car.

Nova walked toward the street, not me, as the buses pulled from the lot. She looked over once more and smiled. An invitation to join her? I walked across the lot to meet her near the intersection before she crossed. My family drove by and waved at Nova–and me, though Nova didn’t know–and turned toward home.

“Hey, big guy. It was nice of you to meet me again today. It’s been a little while. How’ve you been?” She scratched the top of my head. Act like a dog. I licked her hand. “Good boy.”

My tail wagged at her praise. I could do this–act like a dog.

She bent down to scratch behind my ears and be level with my eyes, drawing my attention as we waited for the signal to cross. “Can you do me a favor today, boy? Can you keep me safe from the bad guys?”

I growled lightly and barked. She smiled.

“Good boy. I knew you would.”

We walked in silence–or she did since I had no choice but to remain quiet–the rest of the way to her house.

“Do you want to come inside?” She held the door open for me. I’d only meant to follow her home before keeping watch until Dana and I switched places. How would I get home? I couldn’t just leave her house.

Her face fell. “Well, that’s okay. I don’t see my cat anywhere. Okay, she’s not really my cat, but she saved me this morning. Dad won’t be home until late probably. I’m just a little chicken right now.”

I stepped forward and into the house. Leaving Nova alone wasn’t an option. Not when the Ramseys were on the loose. Somehow, I’d make it to school on time or close to it. And, somehow, Pierre wouldn’t kill me for this.

Nova’s house was small, like tiny. I’d always lived in the mansion. There were a lot of people who lived there with us and that made it seem small at times, but there was a difference between seeming small and being small. Her living room had zero furnishings and her kitchen was small with an island separating the rooms.

“That’s my dad’s room over there.” She pointed to a door on the far wall. “Don’t go in there. He won’t like it. The bathroom is there, and my bedroom is next to it, right there.”

And that was the entire house.

“I’ve got a little bit of homework and then we can have dinner.
